Stop The Violence!

The Stop the Violence Campaign was started in 1990 by Cliff Berkowitz, founder of KHUM, the best radio station in Humboldt County the world. At the time, Cliff was a national radio consultant. He told me, "While working with Washington DC radio station WPCG, the report came down that DC had once again been named the 'Murder Capital of the Nation.' Vowing to do something about the problem with our station there, I came up with the Stop the Violence Day, a one day campaign of personal responsibility aimed at those who might perpetrate the violence." The crux of the idea was that if we can learn to stop the violence for one day, maybe we could do it every day, one day at a time. November 22nd was chosen as Stop the Violence Day, marking not only the anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, but in 1990 (and 2007), also falling on Thanksgiving.

The campaign's success quickly grew into a multi-week campaign and spread to the 20 other radio stations Cliff was working with. Over the next few years the campaign spread nationwide and then internationally. Street violence and gang violence had always been the main thrust of the campaign.

In 1996 when he put KHUM on the air, Cliff vowed to bring the campaign to the local airwaves. However, street violence was not and still isn't as prevalent in rural Humboldt County as in many major urban centers. And while that is a wonderful thing, after a little poking around it became apparent that here in this pristine and idealistic setting, there is still a large amount of violence festering below the surface. Namely, domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

The Stop the Violence Campaign now runs for three weeks every November, when KHUM features stories of survival and talks to local experts on what can be done to address the underlying issues. Aside from being broadcast over the air and streamed live over the internet at KHUM.com, the entire campaign is also available as a podcast at iTunes and at KHUM.com
