A Little Feel-Good Story For You

Thu, 09/01/2016 - 13:54 -- Jess

Hi curlies!  This post isn’t about curly hair, but it IS about starting a business and charitable giving, which are two things I’m clearly passionate about. :)

A few months ago, a dear college friend of mine from Boston wrote me and said her 11 year old son Harry wanted to talk to me about business. Um … ok. :) I was intrigued. :)

She told me that one of his friends had recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Harry decided that he wanted to start making lip balm as a way to raise money for cancer research. He wanted business advice from me. Um… ok! :) Harry and I hung out for a few days when he was 3, so it thrilled me to learn what an awesome human he's evolving into. :)

The end result is Bennett Brothers Balm.

Bennett Brothers Balm

Harry and his little brother Heath (with help and oversight from their mom and dad of course :) ) are now up and running and donating 100% of their profits to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They’ve already made a donation of $587 and have only been in business for a few months. That’s a lot of lip balm, eh?! :)

As you know, charitable giving is important to Jessicurl, and you can read more about our efforts here.

You Have Questions, I Have Answers

Tue, 08/23/2016 - 13:05 -- Jess

Hi Curlies,

On the 3rd Thursday of each month I do a real-time question and answer chat on Facebook so Jessicurl fans can get their hair questions answered. Since not everyone is able to participate due to scheduling, I thought I'd put a few of the questions that came up this past week here in the blog. Hopefully something here helps you in your hair routine. :)

Question: What's the difference between the Confident Coils product and the Rockin' Ringlets? I've actually used them both, but a long time ago for the Confident Coils one. I seem to remember that the Confident Coils one had less hold, but I can't really be sure. I love the Rockin' Ringlets one to pieces, but it seems to make my hair a little dry.

Answer: The two products actually work really well together. Rockin' Ringlets is quite curl enhancing, so it helps to tighten the curls. Confident Coils is great for curl definition and frizz control. So together, they're like a bra: lift and separate. :) Of the two, Confident Coils has more hold. I hope that helps but let me know if you have any other questions. :)

This is a great time to remind you all that we have several product demo videos on our site that show some really helpful tricks and tips for applying the products and getting the best results. You can check those out here.

Question: Are there any products that you suggest to use in place of Spiralicious until the drought is over? A combination, perhaps, that will have the same effect?

Important Information About Spiralicious Styling Gel

Tue, 07/12/2016 - 09:51 -- Jess

Dear Jessicurl Customers,

In early February of this year we introduced a new formulation of Spiralicious using Optiphen rather than Germall as the preservative. Although we had tested the new formulation extensively prior to its release, we are receiving some reports of the product turning color and separating. At this point it is not clear if the issue affects all Spiralicious made with Optiphen or just some of the batches, but out of an abundance of caution we have decided to go back to the original formulation until we understand the issues and are confident the new formulation will reliably perform the way we expect it to. Just for reference, Optiphen contains Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, and Phenoxyethanol, and Germall contains Diazolidinyl Urea, and Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

We have contacted all of our customers who have ordered directly from us, whether on the web or from a salon, but know that many of you buy from your stylist or beauty supply store, so we want to make sure the message gets to you as well.

If you have bought Spiralicious between February 1, 2016 and May 31, 2016 with batch codes between 8436 and 8961, we would like to replace it for you free of charge. Alternatively, you can look at the last section of the ingredients list and if it contains Phenoxyethanol, it is the Optiphen version. Any product with batch codes lower or higher than those listed, or which don’t contain Phenoxyethanol, are the original Germall formulation and should be fine.

New Featured Charity: A Little Help

Fri, 05/27/2016 - 14:44 -- Jess

In January Jessicurl launched our new Giving Program. Over the years we’ve done what we could to support charities and non-profits, usually through donating products to auctions and the like. Starting in 2016 we’re making charitable giving a part of our business model and I couldn’t be more excited.

Each quarter we donate to a different charity or non-profit, and are very much interested in hearing from YOU about who you would like to see us support. Go to our Giving Program page and use the submission form to let us know what is important to you.

A Little Help

For the second quarter of 2016 I'm please to support A Little Help, based in Colorado. This orgnization was suggested by a Jessicurl customer and I'm thrilled to be supporting causes that matter to you! :)

A Little Help began in 2005 when a group of retirees recognized the desire of many seniors to stay in their own homes and contribute to their respective communities. These neighbors based their model on the national village movement, where neighbors coordinate and deliver essential services within their community to allow elders to remain in their homes. In 2007, A Little Help (formerly Washington Park Cares) incorporated as a 501(c)(3) with the mission of providing older adults with non-medical services essential to maintaining active, productive lives in their own homes within community.

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

Introducing The Jessicurl Giving Program

Mon, 01/18/2016 - 13:40 -- Jess

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of our new Giving Program. Over the years we’ve done what we could to support charities and non-profits, usually through donating products to auctions and the like. Starting in 2016 we’re making charitable giving a part of our business model and I couldn’t be more excited.

Each quarter we will donate to a different charity or non-profit, and are very much interested in hearing from YOU about who you would like to see us support. As you you find on the Giving Program page, there is a submission form you can use to let us know. All submissions will be considered and each quarter we will donate to a new organization.

For the first quarter of 2016 I’m so happy to be giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The kids whom St. Jude treats are suffering from life-threatening childhood illnesses such as cancer and sickle cell disease, and many of the treatment protocols require care that can last for years. For example, the average cost for treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, is more than $485,000 over a two to three year treatment plan.

Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. While the hospital accepts insurance, many services provided by St. Jude have never been covered by insurance, and will not be in the future. In fact, only 12% of the money to operate the hospital comes from insurance recoveries and 10% comes from grants.
