Whether you have fine waves or tight coils...
You have the right to remain curly!®

As part of our ongoing series of curly hair stylist and salon interviews, we are highlighting a salon that is located in the same area where Jessicurl is made, Humboldt County! The Trim Scene is wonderful salon in Arcata, CA. If you have any questions about their services, you can call (707) 617-8945 or, since they do not require any appointments, simply walk-in :)

How long have you been in business?

We've been open two years this past Febuary.

Where are you located?

930 Samoa Blvd In beautiful Arcata California, the heart of Humboldt county!

What made you go into the hair business?

We just wanted to make people silky smooth ;)

What is unique about your work, what sets you apart?

We are a full service salon, providing top-notch services in a relaxed environment, catering to walk-ins exclusively we've really found our niche here, this being a young college town made the "easy-in, easy-out" an instant hit (offering a cold PBR hasn't hurt either).

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

While we do not specialize on curlies (we cater all) all of our award winning stylists have all been trained on the specifics of curly hair management, by Ms. Jessica McGuinty herself!  Also keeping up to date on new techniques & continued education.

What changes have you seen in relation to curly hair in the last 10 years?

I think people are more likely to rock their curls more often than seen in the past, with amazing curly oriented products like Jessicurl available, having curly hair is easier than ever.  People are finally able to nourish & maintain their beautiful curls.

How did you first hear about Jessicurl?

Having lived in Humboldt county for several years prior to opening The Trim Scene, we came to hear of Jessicurl thru local radio ads featuring Jessica McGuinty doing or saying something hilarious....

How long have you been carrying Jessicurl?

Since day one.

What sets Jessicurl apart from other lines, curly or otherwise?

It's a wonderful line of helpful products made with guilt-free stuff. The staff is a breeze to work with, my orders & shipments are always here lickety-split. And of course the owner & founder of Jessicurl Jessica McGuinty couldn't be a nicer, funnier, curlier person who happens to be friends with anyone lucky enough to meet her.

Hi curlies!  This post isn’t about curly hair, but it IS about starting a business and charitable giving, which are two things I’m clearly passionate about. :)

A few months ago, a dear college friend of mine from Boston wrote me and said her 11 year old son Harry wanted to talk to me about business. Um … ok. :) I was intrigued. :)

She told me that one of his friends had recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Harry decided that he wanted to start making lip balm as a way to raise money for cancer research. He wanted business advice from me. Um… ok! :) Harry and I hung out for a few days when he was 3, so it thrilled me to learn what an awesome human he's evolving into. :)

The end result is Bennett Brothers Balm.

Bennett Brothers Balm

Harry and his little brother Heath (with help and oversight from their mom and dad of course :) ) are now up and running and donating 100% of their profits to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They’ve already made a donation of $587 and have only been in business for a few months. That’s a lot of lip balm, eh?! :)

Harry and Heath Bennett

As you know, charitable giving is important to Jessicurl, and you can read more about our efforts here.

If your lips are chapped from the hot summer sun, I wholeheartedly recommend  Bennett Brothers Balm. :) I think we can all agree we need more people like them in the world. (And the lip balm rocks too, by the way. :) )

Here's an old picture of me and Harry back when we were both much younger and shorter hair. :)

Harry Bennett and Jessi

Hi Curlies,

On the 3rd Thursday of each month I do a real-time question and answer chat on Facebook so Jessicurl fans can get their hair questions answered. Since not everyone is able to participate due to scheduling, I thought I'd put a few of the questions that came up this past week here in the blog. Hopefully something here helps you in your hair routine. :)

Question: What's the difference between the Confident Coils product and the Rockin' Ringlets? I've actually used them both, but a long time ago for the Confident Coils one. I seem to remember that the Confident Coils one had less hold, but I can't really be sure. I love the Rockin' Ringlets one to pieces, but it seems to make my hair a little dry.

Answer: The two products actually work really well together. Rockin' Ringlets is quite curl enhancing, so it helps to tighten the curls. Confident Coils is great for curl definition and frizz control. So together, they're like a bra: lift and separate. :) Of the two, Confident Coils has more hold. I hope that helps but let me know if you have any other questions. :)

This is a great time to remind you all that we have several product demo videos on our site that show some really helpful tricks and tips for applying the products and getting the best results. You can check those out here.

Question: Are there any products that you suggest to use in place of Spiralicious until the drought is over? A combination, perhaps, that will have the same effect?

Answer: Confident Coils is the closest product we have to Spiralicious. Using it with Rockin' Ringlets will boost the overall hold achieved, though Spiralicious definitely has the most hold in our line. I know this is a rough time - I'm down to one last bottle of it myself! We will absolutely let everyone know when the drought is over and we can all celebrate together. :)

Question: My daughter has 3c/4a dense coils. The ends curl up beautifully, but the first 6-8 inches, theres little to no definition. What can I do?

Answer: How long is your daughter's hair? It's common for longer curly hair to do this, as the weight of the length pulls the curls out somewhat from the root. Also, how old is she? If it's age-appropriate, diffusing with her head upside down can help to encourage better curl at the roots. Of course, if she's a toddler I wouldn't recommend that. :)

Customer reply: Her her pulled straight is about to her belly button, curled- to her shoulders. She is 11 years old.

Answer: Ahh, yes, that's pretty long. :) And I'd imagine also thick/heavy. The plunking method also really helps increase curls at the roots. Here's a link to a video I made a million years ago demonstrating it. :)

The next real-time Facebook chat will be Thursday September 15th from 12:00 - 1:00 pacific time. Make sure to Like Jessicurl on Facebook to participate. :)

Have a curly day! :)

Dear Jessicurl Customers,

In early February of this year we introduced a new formulation of Spiralicious using Optiphen rather than Germall as the preservative. Although we had tested the new formulation extensively prior to its release, we are receiving some reports of the product turning color and separating. At this point it is not clear if the issue affects all Spiralicious made with Optiphen or just some of the batches, but out of an abundance of caution we have decided to go back to the original formulation until we understand the issues and are confident the new formulation will reliably perform the way we expect it to. Just for reference, Optiphen contains Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, and Phenoxyethanol, and Germall contains Diazolidinyl Urea, and Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

We have contacted all of our customers who have ordered directly from us, whether on the web or from a salon, but know that many of you buy from your stylist or beauty supply store, so we want to make sure the message gets to you as well.

If you have bought Spiralicious between February 1, 2016 and May 31, 2016 with batch codes between 8436 and 8961, we would like to replace it for you free of charge. Alternatively, you can look at the last section of the ingredients list and if it contains Phenoxyethanol, it is the Optiphen version. Any product with batch codes lower or higher than those listed, or which don’t contain Phenoxyethanol, are the original Germall formulation and should be fine.

To receive your replacement for bottles bought in the US, please email a proof of purchase along with your phone number and mailing address to us at orders@jessicurl.com. If you bought it from one of our international partners, please contact them directly, as they will issue you a replacement.

As we are destroying all affected batches and replacing them for customers, our production of Spiralicious has been slower than normal. As such, it will take several weeks for you to receive your replacement. We deeply regret the delay and appreciate your patience with the process.

If your Spiralicious is performing well for you, terrific!  However, just as with any Jessicurl product, if you are unhappy with it, we will make it right!  Sincerely,

Jess McGuinty, Founder

In January Jessicurl launched our new Giving Program. Over the years we’ve done what we could to support charities and non-profits, usually through donating products to auctions and the like. Starting in 2016 we’re making charitable giving a part of our business model and I couldn’t be more excited.

Each quarter we donate to a different charity or non-profit, and are very much interested in hearing from YOU about who you would like to see us support. Go to our Giving Program page and use the submission form to let us know what is important to you.

A Little Help

For the second quarter of 2016 I'm please to support A Little Help, based in Colorado. This orgnization was suggested by a Jessicurl customer and I'm thrilled to be supporting causes that matter to you! :)

A Little Help began in 2005 when a group of retirees recognized the desire of many seniors to stay in their own homes and contribute to their respective communities. These neighbors based their model on the national village movement, where neighbors coordinate and deliver essential services within their community to allow elders to remain in their homes. In 2007, A Little Help (formerly Washington Park Cares) incorporated as a 501(c)(3) with the mission of providing older adults with non-medical services essential to maintaining active, productive lives in their own homes within community.

Since then, A Little Help has served over 450 elders and have engaged more than 1,000 community volunteers. A Little Help is helping older adults age in their homes by connecting them to an important resource plentiful in every community; good neighbors. Many tasks around the house and yard chip away at independence, but with A Little Help, good neighbors can help elders with transportation, yard work, handiwork, home organization, and social engagement so they may thrive in the communities they have put down roots in for decades. A Little Help is dedicated to helping older adults thrive in meaningful community by connecting intergenerationally to share stories, combat isolation, and reawaken purpose.

I'm thrilled that Jessicurl can contribute to improving the lives of seniors. I’m also eager to hear from you about who you think we should support in the future, so please feel free to let me know using the form on the Giving Program page.

You can read about who we've contributed to in the past right here.

Here’s to 2016 being a happy and healthy year for everyone.

Neel Loves Curls, and curls LOVE Neel! :) I had the good fortune to meet Neel last year at a Curly Hair Artistry event and he was just a total ray of sunshine. (And clearly VERY dedicated to curly hair, as he came all the way from Australia to attend the event!) If you are in or around Melbourne, please do yourself and your curls a favor and go visit Neel! :)

Neel's Salon

How long have you been in business?

I've been in Melbourne 6 years and had my first salon for 2 years. On the 2nd of April we moved to a larger salon as we needed to expand to meet the curly hair demand!

Neel's Salon

Where are you located?

We are located at 399b Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne, 3065, VIC Australia on one of Melbourne's funkiest streets! The best bit about it is you can get your curls done and not go home and have to redo it with the way we help style the curls and the Jessicurl products! You have soft bouncy curls to sit in cafés or go shopping with!!

What made you go into the hair business?

I decided to go into the hair business because I wanted to travel and I knew I wanted a job where I could talk all day and make people happy!! Learning about curly hair was a happy accident and it because my passion/obsession!!!

What is unique about your work, what sets you apart?

A lot of hairdressers aren't trained in the art of curls and there are sadly no curly hair academys in Australia. I went to America to train in New York. Sadly a lot of hairdressers in Australia still want to straighten the curls and then cut it. That alone is a reason why my salon is so busy! I'm part of a passionate group of curly hair specialists from all over the world called Curly Hair Artistry and we share ideas and I've gone to Detroit to learn more about curls and got to hang out with Jess and learn from her about her amazing products!

Neel and Jess

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

I started to learn more about curly hair in 2005 when I was in Sydney and then had such a lovely reaction from clients that I decided that I enjoyed cutting them more. In 2013 I trained in America (I've been a few times now!) and I decided that I didn't want to cut straight hair anymore and I was getting so busy that regular straight haired clients didn't want to wait 2 months for a cut! So many people kept recommending me that I thought “I want to have my own salon dedicated to curls!!" I opened my first salon in 2014 by myself and now we have a wonderful team of 3 with myself, Jo, and Christine tending to the curls of Melbourne. People are so happy to see a sign up in the window saying CURLY HAIR ONLY and WELCOME CURL FRIEND!!!

Neel's Happy Clients

What changes have you seen in relation to curly hair in the last 10 years?

People are so much better educated about their curls in the last 10 years. When I arrived in 2010 I was having to educate every single client about no sulphates/no silicones and not using a normal towel on your delicate curls (I was also still learning myself!) Books teaching you about curls and YouTube tutorials have been a great help!! Melbourne is a pretty cool city so it's not uncommon to see people rocking their natural hair!

How did you first hear about Jessicurl?

I heard about Jessicurl from a lovely client called Janet. I would ask clients to bring in products they liked using to the salon I was working at as I wanted to see what was out there. (I wanted to be totally sulphate/silicone free and no one else was doing that in Melbourne back then)! I'd wanted to start my own salon to create a safe space for curls. Jessicurl was very kind and gave us a box to experiment with and their tutorials helped us work out which product to use for each curl type!

How long have you been carrying Jessicurl?

We have been using Jessicurl for 2 years now and Spiralicious is our bigger seller. But I love the Aloeba Daily Conditioner too as it really helps with fine curls!

What sets Jessicurl apart from other lines, curly or otherwise?

Jessicurl isn't that well known in Australia yet, but thanks to our clients talking on curly hair blogs it's starting to be very well known in the curly hair community! There isn't any other product here that is so versatile for each different type of curl! Clients rave about it!!

As you can see, your curls will be in VERY good hands at Neel Loves Curls. :) Not to mention the totally awesome selection of capes you get to wear... :)

I love seeing Carleen’s social media posts because it is so clear that curly hair is a huge passion for her, and the resulting photos prove it! Not to mention, she pampers her clients during their appointments :) If you’re in or near Reno, I think you’ll love Carleen. :) Giver her a call at 775.721.2969

Carleen Sanchez

How long have you been in business?

I have had the honor of serving my guests and uplifting the salon industry thru my residency program for over a decade.

Where are you located?

I am located In Midtown Reno Nevada in a private boutique salon getaway.

What made you go into the hair business?

My first adult job was as a professional athlete Snowboarder (Big Air, Halfpipe, slope style) Then I was a massage therapist and a Esthetician. I wanted to get out of the "quiet" services and return to my fun roots and be in the salon where all the fun and laughter is. Life is supposed to be happy and I am happiest working with my team of style residents serving my guests.

What is unique about your work, what sets you apart?

A visit with me is a complete experience. EACH guest is treated to aromatherapy, cuddly blankets, hand arm and scalp massage, hot towel conditioning treatments, makeup tips and tricks, DYI manicure, cocktails, color bar, snack bar, photoshoot, multiple gifts, glamour strands, curly hairstyle lessons and of course hydrated, beautiful hair they can't wait to show off. I have 5 Licensed Cosmetologist Style Residents that I mentor, who assist me in creating this all inclusive experience for my fabulous guests.

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

I love how when I am cutting curly hair a random curl will reach up and hug my finger. I have curly hair and Curly hair speaks to my heart and to my hands. I love to connect with my curly guests and really hear their past struggles and help them overcome the fear that salons in the past have instilled in them.

The Curly Hair Artistry (CHA) group of talented stylists around the world have really inspired and educated me so I could fall even more deeply in love with each curl I meet.

What changes have you seen in relation to curly hair in the last 10 years?

In the last 10 years I have seen more acceptance in the mainstream media but I still think we have a lot more work to do to spread the curl love.

How did you first hear about Jessicurl?

I was asked to join this amazing league of passionate hairstylists that LOVE Curly Hair called CHA (Curly Hair Artistry). CHA Members are always talking about how awesome Jessicurl products are so I had to give them a try.

How long have you been carrying Jessicurl?

My guests and I have been loving Jessicurl for almost 2 years.

What sets Jessicurl apart from other lines, curly or otherwise?

Jessicurl sets apart from other lines because it is EXTREMLY moisturizing and works really well in my dry, Northern Nevada climate. I love the Fragrances and love how Jessicurl is supportive with samples so my guests can easily try new products. I also love Jessicurl Marketing pieces and think they are filled with helpful information.

If you don't already, follow Jessicurl on Instagram to get some really helpful tips from Carleen and other stylists! :)

I've been stalking ... er ... following ... Amalia Rauch on Instagram for a while and am wowed on a regualr basis at the amazing transformations she achieves with Jessicurl products. She's clearly so talented at both cutting and styling curly hair and I had a great time talking all things curls with her recently. :)

Amalia in action.

Where are you located?

Salon Glow is located at 1855 Plumas Street in Reno, Nevada. I am an independent contractor, so I make my own appointments by phone. 775-741-0786

How long have you been in business?

I have been in business a little under 3 years!

Check. Out. Those. CURLS!!

What made you go into the hair business?

My mother was a hairstylist, so I was able to see firsthand the power of beauty. I would read her old cosmotology books over and over, and I even got my hands on a doll head once or twice! I have always felt that I was meant to do hair.

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

I began my own curl journey in April of 2014. I wanted to embrace my waves and stop abusing them with flat irons and silicone. Then I began my apprenticeship later that year with master curl specialist, Carleen Sanchez, and started to learn the ins and outs of curly hair. After my own transformation, it became my mission to teach woman how to love their curls and be true to themselves.

What changes have you seen in relation to curly hair in the last 10 years?

10 years ago, I had no idea about anything related to curly hair! It has been truly exciting to not only discover curly safe products, but an entire curly community!

How did you first hear about Jessicurl?

I first heard about Jessicurl from my mentor, Carleen Sanchez. As soon as I got my hands on it, I knew I had to approach my salon owners about carrying it!

How long have you been carrying Jessicurl?

We have been carrying Jessicurl since April of 2015.

What sets Jessicurl apart from other lines, curly or otherwise?

Jessicurl has variety! I am always confident that I can transform any curl type using only Jessicurl products. The products are very moisturizing, and come in such wonderful scents. Spiralicious is hands down, my favorite product ever!

As you can see, if you live in or near Reno, you can't go wrong putting your curls in Amalia's hands. :) Give her a call! 775-741-0786

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of our new Giving Program. Over the years we’ve done what we could to support charities and non-profits, usually through donating products to auctions and the like. Starting in 2016 we’re making charitable giving a part of our business model and I couldn’t be more excited.

Each quarter we will donate to a different charity or non-profit, and are very much interested in hearing from YOU about who you would like to see us support. As you you find on the Giving Program page, there is a submission form you can use to let us know. All submissions will be considered and each quarter we will donate to a new organization.

For the first quarter of 2016 I’m so happy to be giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The kids whom St. Jude treats are suffering from life-threatening childhood illnesses such as cancer and sickle cell disease, and many of the treatment protocols require care that can last for years. For example, the average cost for treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, is more than $485,000 over a two to three year treatment plan.

Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. While the hospital accepts insurance, many services provided by St. Jude have never been covered by insurance, and will not be in the future. In fact, only 12% of the money to operate the hospital comes from insurance recoveries and 10% comes from grants.

Unlike other hospitals, the majority of funding for St. Jude comes from donors. It costs $2 million per day to operate St. Jude, and public contributions provide 75 percent of the funds necessary to operate the hospital.

I remember being a little kid, around age 10, and seeing St. Jude on TV and just crying and crying because my heart broke for the kids I was watching. I felt so helpless not to be able to do anything for them. (I WAS 10 though, after all.)

Now Jessicurl has been in business for 13 years. The hair business. I understand what a luxury it is to be so consumed with hair, even though I’m also the first to admit that it is MORE than just hair.

For all of these reasons, I’m just elated that we’ll be making a contribution to St. Jude.

I’m also eager to hear from you about who you think we should support in the future, so please feel free to let me know using the form on the Giving Program page.

Here’s to 2016 being a happy and healthy year for everyone.
