Interview with Dianne Nola, Curly Specialist in San Francisco.

Tue, 08/05/2014 - 11:25 -- Jess

I first met Dianne Nola a few years ago after she called to ask some questions about Jessicurl. On a trip to San Francisco I went to meet her in person and I swear, I thought our combined energy was going to cause a brown-out. :) She is abundantly friendly, upbeat, positive and just lifts the spirits of anyone around her. A year or so later I had her cut my hair, so I can vouch that she’s also talented with a pair of scissors! :) I’m pleased to feature her today on my blog. If you’re in or near San Francisco, you won’t be disappointed by your time with Dianne. :)

How long have you been in business?

I've been professionally doing hair since 1988. I've owned my own business for the past 20 years.

Where are you located?

Inside a small salon called, Surreal You Hair Design. It's located a block south of Golden Gate Park in the Inner Sunset district of San Francisco, CA. The way to reach me is through my web site: www.nolastudio.com and phone: 415.786.6402.

What made you go into the hair business?

Actually, I had just graduated from college and was working at a camp. I was cutting the counselors hair for $5 a head and thought, "Hey, I can do THIS for a living!" There were a lot of ads in the newspapers for hair stylists, not musicians (what I was) so I thought it was a smart move to go to beauty school. I had cut hair since grammar school and it was always fun!

If you specialize in curly hair, what made you adopt that focus?

Curly clients have always gravitated to me because I am wavy/curly. Since I've always been a very creative and curious person, working with curly hair was fulfilling to me. There are an infinite variety of textures, colors, ethnicities, shapes, and styles where I can grow and create. But actually defining myself as a "Curl Specialist" evolved over the past five years.

What changes have you seen in relation to curly hair in the last 10 years?

Oh my! What about the past 20 years? It was a lot about using a Leave-In Conditioner because that's all we were taught. When straightening became popular (after the spiral perm trend), those products often helped smooth down the curly hair frizz as well. We were taught to thin out hair, which I believe is on the wane now. Currently there is information and exploration being broadcasted out via the Internet and stylists. Corporations have all jumped on the bandwagon as well trying to make a profit. I believe the increase of non-sulfate shampoos was 60% in the past year. Curly hair is coming into its own trend with the increasing demand of low-maintenance styles and "being natural" is in!

How did you first hear about Jessicurl?

I don't think you know this Jess! I was in Common Scents in Noe Valley (SF) and saw your product in the green bottles. This was 2009. So I see Rockin' Ringlets and I start busting up. I think, "This woman's obviously into music" and I bought a few bottles to check it out on myself. Then I inadvertently met the owner a few months later. We were listening to live music in this small bar and she told me how friendly you were and encouraged me to call you. Though I tried to get my owner to purchase it, I wasn't allowed to sell product in the salon until last year.

How long have you been carrying Jessicurl?

Since June 2013.

What sets Jessicurl apart from other lines, curly or otherwise?

I can wear the Citrus Lavender Oil Blend as a perfume and I usually don't wear fragrance! :)       I LOVE that I get to admire, respect and be inspired by someone I do business with that is a person not a huge evil conglomerate. It's local! The company is aligned with my core values of outstanding customer service, integrity, natural products and an awesome sense of humor!
