Curly Chronicles: Cameron Clarke of Trim Scene

With the visible influx of Curlies around the world passionately embracing their natural hair this year on social media, we just had to take it to the source to confirm what we were getting so excited about on a digital level.

We headed over to one of the most predominant barber shop/salons in the very city that Jessicurl was founded in to talk to one of the stars responsible for championing fellow Curlies loudly exclaiming that “YES, you DO have the right to remain curly” and find out what he is seeing from the salon chair.

Your Name: Cameron Clarke

The Shop You Cut and Style At: Trim Scene in Arcata California.

Tell us a little about Trim Scene:

Predominantly Trim Scene is a barber shop but we do specialize in long hair and curly hair.  Most of our clientele is men but I specialize in women and curly hair. We have stylists here that specialize in anything specific that you need like beard work, long hair, curly hair, or straight cuts.

Tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from originally and what brought you to Humboldt?

I am from Orange County, Newport Beach and that is where I got the salon bug. I followed my best friend from beauty school up here after we graduated and fell in love with the town and decided to stay.

How did you get started on your curly hair journey?

So, I have curly hair myself and wanted to embrace my natural curls instead of blow drying my curls 24/7 and making it straight. I wanted to love my natural curls. I understood that curly hair has so many different facets to it like all different textures and I was immediately fascinated by caring for curls. An individual came into our school and asked if there was anybody that wanted to learn how to cut curly hair and I raised my hand because I knew that so many people didn’t know how to cut curly hair.

You are a huge supporter of Jessicurl. How did you come to use our products?

When I first started working here they had the products  readily available for use and I immediately fell in love with them. They aren’t very heavy, they don’t make your hair sticky, and you can do pretty much anything with all of them. Most of the time I am the person that steals them all from the back bar to stock my station.

We see an increase of people in our communities seemingly embracing their natural curls and we are curious if  you see this from your position as well?

Yes, I absolutely see it!

What are some of your biggest tips for Curlies caring for their hair?

Lots of moisture and a little bit of a leave-in. I love Confident Coils, that is one of my favorites and I pretty much use that everyday, and of course a good haircut makes a big difference. There are a few more steps for curly haired people than straight haired people and they do need to learn them to prevent your curls from becoming a mushroom. I am good at letting people know exactly what their hair type is and sometimes even showing them that there is actually a curl in there that they didn’t even know about. That is an exciting moment when they realize they actually have curly hair.

Are there any other Jessicurl products that you just can’t live without?

I love Rockin’ Ringlets as well and the oils are really good.

What is the best way to support you and Trim Scene?

I have my own Instagram as well as contribute to Trim Scenes Instagram. You can follow us here:
